June 21, 2023

For more than 25 years, at the end of June, students at École St-Dominique (2096 Montfort Street, Sudbury) have the opportunity to take part in the school’s Olympics. For a few days, students from kindergarten to grade 6 are divided into teams representing different countries to partake in sports activities and knowledge games. This year, the Olympics opening ceremony will take place on Monday, June 26, and the activities will take place on June 27 and 29. The closing ceremony and presentation of medals will be held on Thursday, June 29

During the upcoming Olympics, École St-Dominique students who are new to Canada will have the pleasure of seeing their country of origin’s flag on display, and of knowing that their school community will take advantage of this activity to discover their home country. These students will act as ambassadors for their country of origin during the games. With the support of these young ambassadors, École St-Dominique will raise awareness of the hallmarks of several countries, including Ukraine, Chile, Venezuela, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire and others.  As the saying goes, "It's a small world!” Let’s be united!

Additionally, grade 6 students will benefit from leadership opportunities as they act as team leaders. Parents and former students will also participate as volunteers to manage the games and various activities.

In 2010, the Our Children, Our Future agency presented a Merit Award to École St-Dominique in recognition of the excellence of this activity along with the school and school staff’s ability to make a difference in the lives of children, families and the community. This activity also allows former students of École St-Dominique currently pursuing grade 7 and 8 at École catholique Félix-Ricard to return to their previous school during the Olympics. They can return to their roots, see former teachers and develop their leadership skills.
