Zaccharie Lefrançois, a former student at École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur (Sudbury) who is now pursuing his studies at Collège Boréal, stood among the eight outstanding citizens celebrated on February 20th during the Northern Ontario Community Builders Awards of Excellence gala. Zaccharie was presented the Young Leader Award in recognition of his important contributions and the 1,200 volunteer hours he accumulated while still in high school.

Zaccharie was selected for this award due to his contributions to the community and his efforts to promote French culture. In addition to his efforts to build and maintain an outdoor rink at the Lebel Park in Greater Sudbury, the Sacré-Cœur graduate offerered continued support to community activities for seniors, he took part in various fundraising activities and participated in his school’s pastoral committee. Various organizations such as the Elgin Street Mission and the Greater Sudbury Community Action Network continue to benefit from his generosity.

The former Sacré-Coeur student has been honoured with several other awards such as the Greater Sudbury Civic Award for Volunteerism and the Catholic Education Foundation of Ontario’s 2012 Student Merit Award. This provincial award recognizes conduct that meets the goals of Catholic education and celebrates excellence and success in students that stand out through their community involvement. Greater Sudbury’s “Our Children, Our Future” awarded its 2012 Champions for Children prize in the Junior category to Zaccharie and his brother Maxim.

The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality learning environment and academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students enrolled in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
