As in past years, students from Val Caron’s École Jean-Paul II will again take part in the Kiwanis Music Festival. This year, the school will enhance the cultural impact of this activity by hosting part of the festival. The portion of the Kiwanis Festival scheduled for Wednesday, March 26, from 9 to 11 a.m., will take place in the École Jean-Paul II gymnasium (located at 1795 Main St., in Val Caron). All music lovers, including parents from the school, are invited to listen to the students perform. Admission is $3 per person.

This year, thanks to the school serving as a Festival site, nearly 150 École Jean-Paul II students will be able to display their music skills before the judges. The school’s music program, taught by teachers Sylvain Prévost and Viviane Valentim, enjoys a well-earned reputation for its quality. Many Jean-Paul II students have received award recognition at the Kiwanis Music Festival.

Mr. Sylvain Prévost prepared two groups for the Festival. A grade 1 class and a group of 40 students from grades 3, 4 and 5 will play a musical piece on the recorder. Despite their young age, several students will be performing at the festival for the third time and earned distinction awards in 2013. Mrs. Viviane Valentim has prepared a sextet for saxophone comprised of five groups of grade 4 and 5 students. The group playing the saxophone, consisting of students that played the recorder at past festivals, will perform the song Variations sur Twinkle Twinkle.

École Jean-Paul II’s music program has earned a far-reaching reputation for its quality. In grade 1 to 5, students are taught the recorder. Starting in grade 6, they can benefit from their musical knowledge as they are initiated to instruments of the woodwind and brass families. By grade 8, they are offered a selection of popular instruments such as the guitar, the drums and the piano.
