Tanya Quesnel, a grade 12 student from Sudbury’s École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur, was presented with the Craig T. Noble award from ICAN (Independence Centre and Network) Sudbury. Tanya, who recently completed her secondary school studies, was born with cerebral palsy spastic diplegia and is a past ICAN youth services participant.

The Craig T. Noble award is presented to a Greater Sudbury youth between the age of 12 and 21 with a physical disability who demonstrates similar qualities to Craig: an ambition to be independent, a positive attitude, a strong work ethic towards independence, an involvement in the community, a record of volunteering and someone who has set goals for independence.

Tanya is described by her teachers as being driven and independent student with a good sense of humour. This Sacré-Coeur graduate will pursue her studies at the university level in social work and is interested in pursuing a career as a social worker so that she can continue to help children in need.

A member of Walden Cross-Country Fitness Club and Cross-Country Ontario's development team, Tanya excels in cross-country sit-skiing. In March 2013, she competed in the national Nordic ski championships held in Whistler, B.C., where she won one silver and three bronze medals. Having the opportunity to compete against paralympians, she has set a goal to represent Canada at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in South Korea.

“Tanya has demonstrated perseverance and determination and has earned the utmost respect from all students and staff,” stated Mr. Paul Henry, École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur principal. “Her drive to succeed in both her academic studies and in her athletics endeavors has helped her to become a role model whose impact within Sacré-Cœur and in the community has been huge.”
