CSCNO students to take part in the Great Robotics Challenge

On Thursday, February 27, 74 Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) students will meet at the Science North Cavern in Sudbury for the 2014 Great Robotic Challenge (Le Grand Défi Robotique). This friendly contest for students representing nine CSCNO French Catholic elementary schools will see them strive to build the most efficient robot. This year, a video contest will also take place during this event. Members of the media are invited to attend the competition, scheduled to run from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Espanola’s Franco-Ouest Lynx claims North Shore volley-ball title

Last week, the girls’ volleyball team from Espanola’s École secondaire catholique Franco-Ouest won first place at the North Shore Secondary School Athletics (NSSSA) Championships. In a very competitive final round, the Franco-Ouest Lynx defeated Wikwemikong High School Warriors by a score of 3 games to 2.

Jeunesse-Nord wins North Shore basket-ball championship

On February 10, Blind River’s École secondaire catholique Jeunesse-Nord won the North Shore Secondary School Athletics (NSSSA) Basketball Championship in the Boys B Division. With a perfect record of six wins and no losses in regular season play, Jeunesse-Nord was the host team for the regional tournament. The Jeunesse-Nord Aigles started the tournament by defeating École secondaire catholique Franco-Ouest (Espanola) by the score of 38-27 before dominating Elliot Lake’s École secondaire Villa française des jeunes by a walkaway score of 49 to 29.

SWING to present special concert to CSCNO students

The Franco-Ontarian techno-trad band Swing will present a special exclusive concert to grade 7 and 8 students from Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) schools in Greater Sudbury on Friday, February 21, at 12:45 p.m. This concert, which will serve as a prelaunch event of the band’s new mini album entitled "Le temps s’arrête," will take place at the Science North Cavern (100 Ramsey Lake Road, Sudbury). This will be the first album to be released by Swing in close to five years. Members of the media are invited.
Book Fairs to take place at École St-Joseph and École St-Augustin

École St-Joseph (Sudbury) and École St-Augustin (Garson) will host a book fair featuring French-language books and educational products on February 19 and 20. The book fairs will allow students and their families to choose from a variety of French-language educational products such as books, videos, DVDs, software, and educational games.

On February 1 and 2, more than 350 grade 3 and 4 students from a dozen Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) schools had the opportunity to compete in the boys and girls floor hockey tournament.

CSCNO schools win gold, silver and bronze medals at the regional Elementary Cardboard Boat Race competition

On January 28, students from Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) schools won the gold, silver and bronze medals at the North-Eastern Ontario Regional Elementary Cardboard Boat Race competition for elementary schools. No less than 28 teams from various Northern Ontario communities met in Sturgeon Falls to measure their ingenuity. École Ste-Marie (Azilda) won the gold medal, École Saint-Joseph (Wawa) earned the silver medal while the team from École Alliance St-Joseph (Chelmsford) claimed the bronze medal.
École Ste-Marie (Azilda) stood out among competitors through its capacity to build a quick and sturdy cardboard boat. Not only did the vessel navigate a distance of 25 metres in 25.51 seconds, it was able to carry a load of 458 pounds. The team from Chelmsford’s École Alliance St-Joseph had a time of 22.97 seconds and its boat supported a load of 328 pounds. Wawa’s École Saint-Joseph saw its team complete the distance in 29.37 seconds while supporting the maximum load of the day, no less than 588 pounds. As North-East Ontario champions, the École Ste-Marie students, as well as fellow medalists from École Saint-Joseph and École Alliance St-Joseph will travel to Waterloo to take part in the Elementary Provincial Cardboard Boat Races on March 5.
The competition, held by Skills Canada for students from grades 7 and 8, requires each four-student team to design and build a boat. Students were judged on the design and construction quality of their boats, teamwork, organization, security, creativity, team spirit as well as the speed and resistance of their vessels. In addition to seeing the performance of their cardboard boats measured on water over a distance of 25 metres, the teams took part in a load challenge to determine how long their boats could carry a maximum number of team-mates without sinking.
The following CSCNO elementary schools took part in the Elementary Cardboard Boat Races regional competition: École catholique Félix-Ricard (Sudbury) and École catholique Georges Vanier (Elliot Lake).
The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
