More than 1,500 grade 6 to 8 students to take part in St-Jean Baptiste concert

June 5, 2018

Greater Sudbury, June 5, 2018 – On Thursday, June 7, at 10:30 a.m., over 1,500 grade 6, 7 and 8 francophone students from some 30 Greater Sudbury, Sudbury East, North Shore and other Northern Ontario schools will gather at Bell Park’s Grace Hartman Amphitheatre for the St-Jean Baptiste concert featuring the Francophone music group Règlement 17 and DJ Unpier. The concert is presented through the collaborative effort of the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO), the Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l’Ontario (CSPGNO) and Laurentian University.

This quality 90-minute performance will mark the launch of the numerous St-Jean Baptiste activities to take place in Greater Sudbury this month. With the presentation of this concert, partners want to expose students from French language Catholic and public schools to a francophone cultural experience and to reinforce their links with Francophone community partners.

Electro-rock music band Règlement 17 was founded in 2009 and is composed of artists from both Quebec and Ontario, with two of them hailing from northern Ontario. The group’s name comes from the infamous Regulation 17 that was introduced in 1912, which sought to shut down French-language schools in Ontario. It seeks to demonstrate the power of the perseverance and tenacity of Franco-Ontarians who had to fight to maintain their language.

DJ Unpier began his music career in 2010 when he started producing music compilations for his students in his role as cultural facilitator for a French-language school board in Toronto. Since then, DJ Unpier has performed at over 100 concerts in Ontario, showcasing his 100% francophone electronic music.
