The Ministry of Education is encouraging area school boards to work together to address student accommodation needs in Espanola. The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO), Rainbow District School Board and the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) are collaborating to determine how best to deliver education in English and in French in this community.

On Tuesday, October 22, several grade 6 to 8 students from seven Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) schools will participate in the EcoLeague. This learning-based ecological activity, presented by Learning for a Sustainable Future, will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m on the Laurentian University campus. The following CSCNO schools will be represented: École St-Joseph and École St-Denis (Sudbury); École St- Antoine (Noëlville); École Ste-Thérèse (Val Thérèse); École St-Thomas (Warren); École St-Augustin (Garson); and École St-Paul (Sudbury).

During the night of October 9, 115 students and seven teachers from École secondaire catholique Champlain (Chelmsford) as well as six elementary school students took part in the Homeless for a Night activity.

The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Alain Girouard as Vice-Principal at École St-Denisin Sudbury. Mr. Girouard benefits from a wealth of experience having worked as teacher at École Mgr Côté and École Alliance St-Joseph and as curriculum consultant at the Centre franco-ontarien de ressources pédagogiques (CFORP) FARE initiative. He will assume his new functions on October 21, 2013

Mélanie-Rose Frappier, a grade 11 student at École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur in Sudbury, was selected as one of the recipients of the Aboriginal Youth Achievement Award. This national distinction, presented annually by the Congress of Aboriginal People’s National Youth Council, recognizes youth for their achievements and contributions as role models. The award ceremony will take place in Ottawa on Friday, October 18.

Sudbury – On September 27, 45 grade 7 and 8 students (34 boys and 11 girls) from nine Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) schools took part in the 5th annual CSCNO golf tournament. This competition enabled the talented St-Denis (Sudbury), St-Joseph (Sudbury), Félix-Ricard (Sudbury), St-Augustin (Garson), Jean-Paul II (Val Caron), Notre-Dame (Hamner), Ste-Marie (Azilda), Alliance St-Joseph (Chelmsford) and Saint-Joseph (Espanola) golfers to benefit from a friendly competitive encounter with fellow students from neighbouring French Catholic schools.

As part of Native Education awareness initiatives in Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario schools, a group of grade 10 students from École secondaire catholique Champlain (Chelmsford) will take part in an activity designed to raise awareness on the realities of the residential school system in Canada. This activity, hosted by Laurentian University’s Indigenous Programs, will take place in the J.N. Desmarais Library Archives on Tuesday, October 1, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
