École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur student wins third silver medal at Canada Games

February 27, 2015

Tanya Quesnel, a grade 12 student at Sudbury’s École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur, won her third silver medal at the Canada Games in Prince Georges, British Columbia. On February 26, Tanya placed 2nd in the 5 km sit-ski para female race. This silver medal performance follows two other outstanding performances where she won the silver medal earlier this week in the 2.5 km and 800 metres sit-ski para female races.

Last week, Tanya had a standout performance at the Ontario secondary school provincial championship (OFSAA) where she won the sit-ski para female race. She had also won this event in the Sudbury District and Northern Ontario (NOSSA) competition.

Tanya Quesnel, a grade 12 student from Sudbury’s Catholic high school École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur, was presented earlier this year with the Craig T. Noble award from ICAN (Independence Centre and Network) Sudbury. Tanya was born with cerebral palsy spastic diplegia and is a past ICAN youth services participant. The Craig T. Noble award is presented to a Greater Sudbury youth between the age of 12 and 21 with a physical disability who demonstrates an ambition to be independent, a positive attitude, a strong work ethic towards independence, and an involvement in the community.

Tanya is described by her teachers as being a driven and independent student with a good sense of humour. Upon graduation, this Sacré-Coeur student will pursue her studies in social work at the university level.

A member of the Walden Cross-Country Fitness Club and Cross-Country Ontario’s development team, Tanya excels in cross-country sit-skiing. In March 2013, she competed in the National Nordic Ski Championship held in Whistler, B.C., where she won one silver and three bronze medals. Having the opportunity to compete against paralympians, she has set a goal to represent Canada at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in South Korea.

“Tanya has demonstrated perseverance and determination and has earned the utmost respect from all students and staff,” stated Mr. Paul Henry, École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur principal. “Her drive to succeed in both her academic studies and in her athletics endeavors has helped her to become a role model whose impact within Sacré-Cœur and in the community has been huge.”
