École Ste-Marie and École Saint-Joseph students finish 4th and 5th at the provincial Cardboard Boat Race competition

March 26, 2014

On March 5, three teams representing the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) took part in the Elementary Provincial Cardboard Boat Races held in Waterloo. CSCNO students were very successful among the 21 competing teams with École Ste-Marie (Azilda) finishing 4th overall, while the teams from École Saint-Joseph (Wawa) finished 5th and École Alliance St-Joseph (Chelmsford) was 12th.

The team from École Ste-Marie accumulated a final score of 75.75 points and was only 2.25 points from earning a bronze medal. The Azilda students were second in the load challenge competition as their boat supported a load of 593 pounds. Their boat also covered the 25 metres distance in 24.50 seconds. The students from École Saint-Joseph in Wawa were rewarded for their speed as their vessel, with a performance of 18.18 seconds, was the second quickest of the event. This vessel also was able to support a load of 388 pounds.

The competition, held by Skills Canada for students from grades 7 and 8, required each four-student team to design and build a boat. Students were judged on the design and construction quality of their boats, teamwork, organization, security, creativity, team spirit as well as the speed and resistance of their vessels. In addition to seeing the performance of their cardboard boats measured on water over a distance of 25 metres, the teams took part in a load challenge to determine how long their boats could carry a maximum number of team-mates without sinking.

The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
