Amelia Spacek, a grade 12 student at l’école secondaire Notre-Dame-du-Sault (Sault Ste. Marie), is among the Canadian students selected for the presitigious Loran Scholarship. Every year, The Loran Scholars Foundation assesses over 5,000 applicants and select some 30 promising young Canadians as Loran Scholars, based on evidence of integrity, courage, leadership, community involvement, compassion, grit, and a high level of personal autonomy. This soon-to-be ES Notre-Dame-du-Sault graduate will receive a scholarship award valued at $100,000 over four years, including mentorship, funding for summer internships and participation in an extensive network of past and present scholars.

This year, Amelia is the Prime minister of her school’s student parliament and sits on the Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon’s Student Senate. As captain of her school’s robotics team, she supports younger students by teaching robotics-focused coding classes. Through this support, École Notre-Dame-du-Sault was able to shine at provincial-level robotic competitions and qualify to compete at the VEX Robotics IQ Challenge World Championship. Amelia has also volunteered with the Professional Engineers of Ontario at community STEM (Science, technology, engineering and mathematics) outreach events. While playing hockey, volleyball, and basketball, Amelia also has a passion for music and performs weekly at a palliative care centre in her community. Interested in engineering, Amelia will pursue her university studies in this field.

“It is with a feeling of great pride that we see Amelia, a soon-to-be graduate of ÉS Notre-Dame-du-Sault, stand out at the national level in light of her academic successes and leadership skills,” stated Mr. Paul Henry, CSC Nouvelon Director of Education. « Recognized for her passion and excellence in science and engineering, this student has made all the difference in her school community by contributing to the success of several initiatives including the Noël Portage sharing campaign in support of local families in need. «
