The musical and artistic talents of École secondaire catholique l’Horizon (Val Caron) and Collège Notre-Dame’s (Sudbury) student music groups will be on display during the upcoming La Brunante event on Saturday, May 26, at 7 p.m. in the Collège Boréal amphitheatre. Among the three finalists to perform at the concert, which features future Franco-Ontarian music stars, will be Fjord from ÉSC l’Horizon and the Maxine Lemieux group from Collège Notre-Dame.
Fjord is a three-member band composed of students Meagan Bigras, Michel Roux and Nikola Goulet from École secondaire catholique l’Horizon. Band members are part of the school’s music committee as well as three of the five founding members of the music group 5 à 7. The group earned several awards at this year’s “Quand ça nous chante” festival which earned them a spot at the “Festival international de la chanson de Granby” (Granby international music festival) this summer. In addition to presenting a selection of songs from known artists, the group will also showcase three original compositions.
Maxine Lemieux, Isabelle Loiselle, Stéphane-Rose Loiselle and Cassie Renaud from Collège Notre-Dame together make up the Maxine Lemieux group. Maxine received one of the awards for best solo artist at the 2017, “Quand ça nous chante” festival. This guaranteed her a spot at the “Festival international de la chanson de Granby” last summer, where she was one of 12 participants chosen to record an original composition, in her case: “Le temps c’est de l’argent”.
“We take great pride in seeing our students showcasing their talents on the emerging Franco-Ontarian musical scene. By participating in La Brunante, these young musicians are displaying their desire to develop their Francophone identity and contribute to the growth of a thriving Franco-Ontarian culture,” stated CSCNO Director of Education, Ms. Lyse-Anne Papineau.
The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality learning environment and academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students enrolled in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
