École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur student honoured for her community leadership

March 27, 2015

Mélanie-Rose Frapper, a grade 12 student at Sudbury’s École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur, stood among the eight outstanding citizens celebrated on March 26 during the Northern Ontario Community Builders Awards of Excellence gala. Mélanie-Rose was presented the Young Leader Award in recognition of her important contributions and volunteerism at the community level.

Mélanie-Rose Frappier is involved in a wide range of youth, community and cultural activities. Proud of her Francophone, Catholic, and Métis heritage, she is the student representative for the Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee and played an important role in creating the first Aboriginal Studies course to be offered in the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario.

This École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur student was spokesperson for the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples’ Find Your Voice program, helping to inspire other students to realize their dreams and to make a difference in their community. She also volunteers to promote healthy living in her community through her non-profit organization It’s Cool to be Healthy (C’est cool d’être en santé). In 2013, Mélanie-Rose was chosen to be Youth Ambassador of Canada to the United States Embassy. Earlier this month, she was also awarded the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for Youth Achievement.

“Mélanie-Rose is an active community leader who strives to enhance people’s lives through her many contributions”, stated Mrs. Lyse-Anne Papineau, Director of Education at the CSCNO. “Bright and articulate, she takes great pride in her Francophone, Catholic, and Métis heritage and is making a difference in her community.”

The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality learning environment and academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 7,000 students enrolled in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
