Students and staff at Collège Notre-Dame in Sudbury celebrated today the official launch of the Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program in Sports. The launch of the newly added program that will enrich the curriculum of this French Catholic secondary school was attended by students, community members and school partners. Collège Notre-Dame is the only French language school in Greater Sudbury to offer this coveted SHSM.
The SHSM sports program will make it possible for students to personalize their high school experience and accumulate transferable skills and competences to facilitate their entry into the job market. The program provides a solid basis of sector-specific knowledge and contextualized skills related to sports on which to build their training or apprenticeship experience, pursue their studies at the college or university level, exposing students to the realities of the work environment and ensuring that they are better prepared to make informed career decisions.
SHSM sports students will be able to accumulate specialist credits centred on knowledge and skills proper to the sports sector as they also accumulate sector related cooperative education credits. Moreover, students that participate in the SHSM program obtain six experiential certifications that provide an advantage when they are ready to enter the workforce. The program will offer a specialization in the following areas: competitive and recreational sports, sports administration as well as sports in the media (audiovisuals). Collège Notre-Dame students already benefit from an expertise in this area that will greatly benefit students as the school presently offers courses linked to this SHSM program in the sports field.
Mrs. Johanne Chrétien, Collège Notre-Dame principal, is confident that the program meets the needs of both students and Northern Ontario. “It is important to encourage students to pursue their passion and to build links with economic sectors where they can excel. Several important sports-related sectors can benefit from the expertise and passion of qualified professionals. We believe that our students, who stand out with their high level of bilingualism, their passion and excellence in sports, will be better prepared to contribute actively by gaining access to this new program. The SHSM in health and wellness favours experiential learning and provides students with activities that are relevant outside the classroom. Students who are interested in a career in sports administration, management of sports’ infrastructure and programs, events management, communications, officiating sports, team or personal trainer, athletic therapy, teaching and sport psychology will be impressed by the wide range of career choices available in the sports sector, all offering great promise.”
This program will allow a greater number of Collège Notre-Dame students to benefit from training that will facilitate their professional integration into this economic sector and contribute to the training of qualified francophone and bilingual experts who will share their passion in Greater Sudbury and elsewhere in Ontario.
The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario currently offers nine Specialist High Skills Major programs: Health and Wellness at ÉS du Sacré-Cœur (Sudbury), ÉSC l’Horizon (Val Caron), ÉSC Champlain (Chelmsford), and ÉS Notre-Dame-du-Sault (Sault Ste. Marie); Business at Collège Notre-Dame (Sudbury), Mining at ÉSC Horizon and ESC Champlain; Justice, Community Safety, and Emergency Services at ES du Sacré-Coeur; as well as Sports at Collège Notre-Dame. These programs provide students with opportunities to acquire knowledge and competences that are relevant to an economic activity sector in exciting apprenticeship environments that are in line with their career goals. They also help students to concentrate on obtaining their diplomas and pursuing their goals at the post-secondary level.
The Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario offers a French Catholic Educational Program that is widely recognized for its excellence. The CSCNO provides a quality academic program that runs from early childhood to adult education, with some 6,800 students in 27 elementary and 10 secondary schools.
