École Jean-Paul II students unite in support of Ukraine

May 18, 2022

Students and staff of École Jean-Paul II (Val Caron) gathered on Tuesday, May 17, on the school grounds during a rally to celebrate the success of a fundraising campaign in support of the victims of the ongoing war in Ukraine. This activity, highlighting the importance of human solidarity, included the presentation of a donation worth $2,030.25 to the Relief Fund for the Humanitarian Crisis in Ukraine to Ms. Louise Trudel of the Canadian Red Cross.

This donation was made possible following a fundraiser initiated by the school’s Val Coeurons Club in April. The members of this club, made up of grade 7 and 8 students, were affected by the war in Ukraine and wanted to help the victims of this ongoing conflict in Europe. As part of this fundraising activity, students coordinated the sale and distribution of coco-grams among students and school staff. Sold at the price of $1, the coco-grams (small chocolate) were distributed on April 12-14 prior to the celebration of Easter.

This coco-gram sales campaign is the first charitable initiative carried out at École Jean Paul II school in more than two years due to the pandemic. The Val Coeurons Club is proud to be able to resume its charitable activities and support a cause close to their hearts.

“Our student members of the Val Coeurons Club wanted to support the victims in Ukraine and understand the importance of opening up to the world at a young age. This effort raised awareness among students and allowed them to realize that they can make a difference at a local level while supporting the victims of a conflict that is touching the lives of many people in Eastern Europe. We are proud of our students at École Jean-Paul II. Through their actions, they showed that they are true citizens of the world,” said Natalie Lamontagne, Vice-Principal at École Jean-Paul II.
