June 28, 2022

The robotics team from École secondaire Notre-Dame-du-Sault (Sault Ste. Marie) maintained its tradition of excellence at the provincial level in robotics this year. Earlier this spring, this team surpassed itself at the Skills Ontario Olympics and placed 6th place in the province and first among French-language schools. The ÉS Notre-Dame-du-Sault robotics team was awarded a monetary prize of $2,000 for its outstanding performance.

Grade 5 and 6 students at École Ste-Marie (Azilda) were recently rewarded with a national recognition by claiming the first prize of the 2022 Empowering Youth Climate Action initiative for their Active Transportation project named “Roulons marchons Lions.” No less than 300 action projects from across Canada took part in this initiative presented by Learning for a Sustainable Future (LSF) and Environment and Climate Change Canada, which encourages schools across the country to take additional sustainability and climate action in their schools. As a result of the students’ recognized efforts, École Ste-Marie was awarded a prize valued at $3,000.

Seven Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon schools recently received the EcoSchools Canada certification for the 2020-2021 school year. With this designation, the EcoSchools Canada Program recognizes the work of schools in promoting environmental learning and climate action. École St-Denis (Sudbury) and École secondaire catholique Champlain (Chelmsford) were each awarded a platinum level certification, École Saint-Joseph (Blind River) and École secondaire catholique l’Horizon (Val Caron) obtained a gold level certification, École St-Augustin (Garson) earned a silver level a certification while a bronze level certification was awarded to Collège Notre-Dame (Sudbury) and to École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur (Sudbury).

The Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon is pleased that its efforts in increasing its energy efficiency have not gone unnoticed. In fact, the CSC Nouvelon ranked 5th in the 2022 Top Energy Performing School Boards Report that measures the energy efficiency of Ontario school board for the 2019-2020 school year. The 72 school boards in the province were ranked on their energy savings potential, which is the gap between their target and current energy consumption values.

During its May 31, 2022 meeting, the Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon proceeded with the selection of a new school board trustee to represent constituents living in Greater Sudbury’s Zone 5 (Wards 7 to 12). Ms. Monique Aubin-Gagné was the selected candidate and will serve in this position until the next school board elections in October 2022.

As part of its efforts to encourage and ensure equity, respect and inclusion in its school communities, the Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon, in collaboration with its Parents’ Participation Committee, launched the production of a series of four videos. This project seeks to raise awareness within the board’s school communities and provide a better appreciation of the different cultures that surround them, and more particularly the cultures of the First Nations, Métis and Inuit. In addition, these videos will offer a brief overview of the impact of colonization on some forms of artistic expression. This initiative, made possible through funding from the Ontario Ministry of Education, benefits from the support of Parents, partenaires en éducation.

Conseil scolaire catholique Nouvelon’s French-language Catholic elementary schools are inviting children who are starting Kindergarten in September 2022, along with their families, to take part in their “Bienvenue à la maternelle” (Welcome to Kindergarten) event. Parents who have not registered their children in a CSC Nouvelon school still have time to register for this event by calling their neighbourhood school.
