Through a $3,000 contribution from Caisse Desjardins Ontario towards its "Rouler sans limites" project, École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur (Sudbury) will be able to introduce students to outdoor cycling activities this spring. This support will enable the school to purchase some 15 mountain bikes, helmets, air chambers and repair kits. By having access to this equipment in their secondary school, more students will be able to discover and take part in this sporting activity.

"With our school being located in downtown Sudbury, many students do not have access to a bicycle and were not able to partake in physical activities normally initiated in secondary schools during the pandemic years. While introducing students to a new sport, this project will promote the development of sporting skills and have a beneficial effect on the participants’ motivation and well-being," explained Mr. Jonathan Marcil, teacher at ÉS du Sacré-Cœur and project promoter.

ÉS du Sacré-Cœur already stands out for its Outdoor Education course, which promotes physical activity and the development of various skills such as independence, teamwork and respect for oneself, others and the environment. With the integration of bicycles into the sports equipment offered to students, ÉS du Sacré-Coeur plans to incorporate a bike-camping trip into the group’s outdoor excursions. There are also plans to launch an after-school cycling club for all interested students.

" Our students registered in the outdoor sports course were proudly involved in the development of the project and will be entrusted with the responsibility of doing maintenance on the bikes. All required equipment as well as the school workshop will be made available to them. With the support of a Sudbury cycling store, our students will benefit from training to learn new skills and knowledge required for them to keep the bikes in good condition,” stated Mr. Jonathan Marcil.
