The girls’ hockey team from Wawa’s École secondaire Saint-Joseph dominated at the 2013 Franco-Ontarian Hockey Tournament, held in Pembroke and Petawawa from March 25 to 27. Well prepared for the tournament, the Chevaliers finished atop Division A (smaller schools) following the preliminary round.
In their first game, the Chevaliers edged É.s.c. Trillium (Chapleau) Coyotes by a score of 4 to 3. Shelby Lytwenko scored the first goal, while goalie Brianna Germain made several outstanding saves. During their encounter with École secondaire Georges-Vanier (Smooth Rock Falls), team captain Evra Lévesque scored no less than five goals, leading the Chevaliers to a 5-2 victory. Saint-Joseph won its third game by a score of 2-0, led by the two-goal effort of Edie Lévesque.
In the playoff round, the Chevaliers were defeated 5-0 by the squad from École secondaire Le Caron (Penetanguishene), the Division A championship team. Still, it was with great pride and a feeling of accomplishment that the Saint-Joseph Chevaliers returned to Wawa, with a 3rd place finish among small schools at the Franco-Ontarian Hockey Tournament for the second year in a row.
Mr. Philippe Lacroix, coach of the Chevaliers, presented the most valuable player awards to Brianna Germain, Evra Lévesque, Edie Lévesque and Islay Smedley. In a new tradition of rewarding outstanding efforts among players, the team presented the Medal of Effort to team captain Evra Lévesque after the first game. She passed the medal to Jessica Mazonnello following the second game in recognition of Jessica’s many passes. Jessica then passed it on to Edie Lévesque, who in turn handed it to her line mate, Courtney Proulx.
