Since Friday, June 21, students at Sudbury’s École St-Dominique (2096 Montfort St., Sudbury) are participating in the 18th St-Dominique Olympic Games. This school activity, which promotes participation and fair play, will wrap up on Wednesday, June 26, with its closing ceremonies. In 2010, the Our Children-Our Future agency presented an Award of Excellence to École St-Dominique to highlight this excellent activity and acknowledge the capacity of the school and its staff in making a difference in the lives of children, families and the entire community.

Since 1996, École St-Dominique has organized several days of sports and knowledge-based games at the end of June for students from Junior Kindergarten to grade 6 who are divided into teams representing various countries. Grade 6 students benefit from leadership opportunities as they act as team leaders. Parents and former students also participate as volunteers and manage the games and various activities. The school uses the Olympic concept to make all students aware of the individual characteristics of each country.

The Olympics also resulted in a beneficial partnership between New Sudbury’s two French language Catholic schools. The activity provides an opportunity for St-Dominique graduates now studying at École catholique Félix-Ricard to revisit their former school during the games, collaborate with their former teachers and develop their leadership abilities.

“We can proudly and convincingly state that our St-Dominique youngsters experience fun times and will have pleasant memories of the games due to the dedication of our dynamic staff, who are fully devoted to our students,” stated École St-Dominique Principal Mrs. Lucie Hurtubise.
