Students from Sault Ste. Marie’s École Notre-Dame-du-Sault displayed their ingenuity during the Algoma Regional First Lego League Competition held on November 30 at Sault College. With 12 teams competing, students from Notre-Dame-du-Sault rose to the challenge and finished first overall, earning the right to represent the District of Algoma at the provincial First Lego League Competition in Waterloo on January 11, 2014. The students from Notre-Dame-du-Sault also won the Algoma Regional First Lego League Competition in 2012 and competed at the provincial championship in 2011 and 2012.

As part of the regional competition, teams of students aged 9 to 14, spent 12 weeks building and programming Lego Mindstorm robots prior to the competition. The robots were tested during the Senior Solutions Challenge, which challenged students to master natural disasters. The Lego competition encouraged students to demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play and sportsmanship.

In addition to their individual medals, the Notre-Dame-du-Sault students won two first-place awards for Robot Design and Robot Performance. Notre-Dame-du-Sault were the Champions of the day, which is judged to be the team that best embodies the First Lego League experience by fully embracing the Core Values while achieving excellence and innovation in both the Robot Game and Project.

Members of the Notre-Dame-du-Sault team include the following students: Amelia Spacek, Caleb Patterson, Dana Thomson, Meckenzie Pigeon, Kasia Dubreuil, Chanel Dubreuil, Cassandra Breckenridgem and Aeden Colynuck. They were coached by Pascale Crepault-Breckenridge, David Spacek and Andrew Patterson.
