SUDBURY – The University of Sudbury and Sudbury’s École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur will proceed with the planting of 100 trees, generously donated by Collège Boréal, on Tuesday, May 27, at 10 a.m.on the grounds of École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur (261, Notre Dame Avenue, Sudbury).
This activity, which did not take place on April 22 due to persistent winter weather, will enable both teaching institutions to celebrate their common history. Taking part in this activity are Dr. Pierre Zundel, University of Sudbury President, Mrs. Monique Chrétien, Superintendent of Education at the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario, and Mr. Paul Henry, École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur Principal. Media are invited to attend.
École secondaire du Sacré-Cœur students will join the dignitaries and plant the 100 trees in celebration of the University of Sudbury’s 100th anniversary in a wooded area located on the property of the secondary school and former site of the Collège du Sacré-Coeur.
The collaboration between the two institutions is not a mere coincidence since they share a common history. In 1913, the Society of Jesus established a classical college for boys called Collège du Sacré-Coeur on the existing site of the École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur. Through the years, the Collège du Sacré-Coeur would become a centre of excellence in education for Franco-Ontarian youth and would take the name of University of Sudbury in 1957. The Collège itself closed its doors and ceased offering secondary school education in 1967. In recognition of the long-standing Francophone Catholic tradition of this historical site, the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario opened in 2003 the new École secondaire du Sacré-Coeur on the very same grounds where the former College once stood.
