Thanks to the high quality of their science projects, several Collège Notre-Dame (Sudbury) students stood out during the Sudbury Regional Science Fair held on the Laurentian University campus on April 13 and 14.

Abigail Thorpe and Josée Courtemanche, two grade 12 students at Collège Notre-Dame, distinguished themselves at the Science Fair through the quality of their project entitled “Sudbury’s Toxic Soils and their Effects on Garden Vegetables.” They are among the seven Greater Sudbury students to qualify for the 2013 Canada-Wide Science Fair to be held in Lethbridge (Alberta) on May 11-18. These students are among some 25,000 emerging Canadian scientists from grades 7 through 12 to participate in more than 100 regional science fairs throughout the country.

On Friday, April 19, students from École Notre-Dame (Hanmer), École St-Paul (Lively) and École St-Étienne (Dowling) will have the opportunity to witness a master drummer in action during his tour in two Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) schools. Amadou Kienou will present a show at 9:30 a.m., at École Notre-Dame, located at 4503 Dennie St., in Hanmer. In the afternoon, at 1 p.m., he will display his musical skills at École St-Paul, located at 185 6th Avenue, in Lively. Members of the media are invited to attend either of the presentations.

On Thursday, April 18, and Friday, April 19, some 120 Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) high school students will unleash their passion for music and art at the 5th edition of the cultural-artistic event called Mélomanie. This educational and identity-building experience is one in which secondary school students with a strong interest in the arts can take part in a unique French language activity designed to complement the high quality musical and arts programs offered in CSCNO high schools. The activities will take place on the Laurentian University campus. Members of the media are most welcome to attend all activities.

WHAT? CSCNO Elementary Junior Coed Basketball Tournament

Media representatives are cordially invited to view the basketball games that will be played by the nine teams competing in the 2013 Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario (CSCNO) Elementary Junior Coed Basketball Tournament. This friendly competition will attract the participation of boys and girls in grades 4, 5 and 6 from the following schools: Jean-Paul II (Val Caron), St-Pierre (Sudbury), Félix-Ricard (Sudbury), Notre-Dame (Hanmer), St-Denis (Sudbury) Ste-Thérèse (Val Thérèse) and Hélène-Gravel (Sudbury).

The girls’ hockey team from Wawa’s École secondaire Saint-Joseph dominated at the 2013 Franco-Ontarian Hockey Tournament, held in Pembroke and Petawawa from March 25 to 27. Well prepared for the tournament, the Chevaliers finished atop Division A (smaller schools) following the preliminary round.

Starting at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, April 12, some 30 students from Collège Notre-Dame in Sudbury will participate in an activity under a fictional starry sky. During approximately 20 hours, gathered in the school with their sleeping bags and flashlights, the students will take part in the third edition of the “Camping Under a Fictional Starry Sky” (Camping sous les étoiles fictives) activity. This reading-camping session will wrap up on Saturday morning, at 11 .a.m., following a pancake breakfast.
